What Does the Check Engine Light Actually Mean?
Your car's onboard computer — the OBD-II system — monitors dozens of sensors across your engine, transmission, and emissions system. When something falls outside the normal range, it stores a fault code and turns on the check engine light.
That code tells us where the problem is. Without reading it, you're just guessing.
Common causes we see every week in Etobicoke:
Loose / faulty gas cap
Most common cause. Easiest fix. Always worth checking first.
Oxygen sensor failure
Hurts fuel efficiency. Left too long, it damages the catalytic converter.
Catalytic converter issue
Expensive to fix — but caught early, it's manageable.
Mass airflow sensor
Engine runs rough, poor fuel economy. Common on higher-mileage vehicles.
Spark plugs / ignition coil
Misfires, rough idle, sluggish acceleration. Often a straightforward fix.
Transmission fault codes

Evap system leak
